HMRC announces 1 million employers reporting RTI

May 2, 2013

HMRC announced today that 1 million employer PAYE schemes are now reporting RTI in its first month of operation. It became compulsory for employers to report PAYE in real time on 6 April. Some 70,000 RTI returns were received over the first few days and almost a month later, that total has grown to a million.

Despite some problems in the initial phase of the launch including HMRC and commercial payroll software suppliers’ helplines being inundated by callers, the commencement of RTI reporting appears to have been a success.

Ruth Owen, HMRC’s Director General of Personal Tax said:

“RTI is bringing PAYE into the 21st century, and it is amazing that we have reached the one million mark in less than a month.  [We] are carefully monitoring submissions, but so far things are going well.

“We have had lots of feedback from many employers saying that RTI is easy to use. We know it will take time before all employers adapt to RTI, but any who haven’t started reporting in real time should do so quickly. All the help they need is on HMRC’s website.”

Rebecca Benneyworth of the ICAEW’s Tax Faculty commenting on the overall volume of RTI returns to date on Twitter, said this was “better than expected.”
